“What if Phoenix Had Lived?”

In *What If...? #32: "What if Phoenix Had Lived?"*, a fractured reality unfolds when Jean Grey survives the Phoenix Force’s destruction—only to be stripped of her powers by the Shi'ar in a psychic lobotomy. Written by George Caragonne and Chris Claremont, with art by Rod Ramos and inks by Jan Anton Harpes, this alternate tale follows Jean as she rebuilds her life with Scott, raises a daughter named Rachel, and faces a terrifying threat from the Shadow King, who now inhabits Mastermind’s body. The cover by Rod Ramos and Jan Anton Harpes captures the haunting moment of Jean’s final realization—just before her death, she recalls she was never the real Jean Grey.

The Shi'ar give Jean Grey a psychic lobotomy, cutting her off from the Phoenix force and her own mutant powers. Jean, now a normal human, leaves the X-Men and marries Scott. Magneto abducts her to Asteroid M and offers to reconnect her to the Phoenix force but she refuses. She returns to earth and has a daughter named Rachel. While Scott is off fighting the Secret Wars, Jean is accosted by Mastermind whose body is hosting the Shadow King. Jean is shot by the Shadow King who vows to use baby Rachel as his host body. As she is dying, Jean remembers that she is just a copy of the real Jean Grey.
