Thunderbolt Ross, not Bruce Banner, drives out to get Rick Jones away from a gamma bomb testing site. Ross is caught in the blast which immediately turns him into a grey, hulking monster. Able to think clearly but unable to communicate verbally other than howls and roars, Ross is shunned by his frightened daughter and attacked by his own army. As he tears apart a tank with his bare hands, Ross realizes that he is now the most powerful weapon in the world. After accidentally killing Betty, however, Ross reverts to human form in grief and Banner takes matters into his own hands.
