About this Issue

Winter Soldier #1 (Vol. 2, cover-dated February 2019, on-sale December 5, 2018) marks a distinct creative pivot for Bucky Barnes — away from the spy-thriller framework of the Ed Brubaker era and toward an intimate, street-level redemption story in which Bucky repositions himself as a 'fixer,' helping ex-criminals rebuild their lives the same way he rebuilt his own. The issue introduces RJ, a Hydra-engineered teenage assassin deliberately modeled after the Winter Soldier himself, setting up a mirror-image moral dilemma that gave the miniseries its thematic spine. By grounding a character previously defined by geopolitical Cold War intrigue in a quieter, trauma-informed human drama, the book contributed to a broader late-2010s Marvel trend of decompressed, character-first solo storytelling. The series also represents the second time Bucky received his own solo title in the 2010s, consolidating his standing as a lead character fully independent of the Captain America franchise.

In "Second Chances: Part One," the Winter Soldier—now trying to leave his past behind—lives under a new identity in Shelbyville, Indiana, aiding those in witness protection. When he reaches out to a former Hydra agent seeking redemption, the organization responds with a deadly message: an assassin dressed exactly like the Soldier was in his Bucky Barnes days. Written by Kyle Higgins and illustrated by Rod Reis, with a cover by Rod Reis, this 2019 Marvel issue marks a pivotal moment in the character’s journey.

History

Writer Kyle Higgins and artist Rod Reis were announced as the creative team in September 2018, with Marvel positioning the book as a reunion for the two collaborators who had previously worked together on the creator-owned Image series C.O.W.L. Higgins publicly framed the book around the challenge of defining a former sidekick outside his mentor relationship, drawing on his experience writing other 'grown-up sidekicks' — a sensibility informed by his extensive work on DC's Nightwing and Boom! Studios' Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The five-issue miniseries was edited by Tom Brevoort and Alanna Smith under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, with lettering by Clayton Cowles. A notable production anomaly affected some first-print copies: a printing error caused 12 pages of the story to be replaced by 12 pages of Venom #9, creating an unintended variant that collectors have since distinguished from standard copies.
