The issue was written by Chris Claremont alongside co-plotter Chris Carlson, pencilled by Leinil Francis Yu, inked by Mark Morales, colored by Liquid!, and lettered by Richard Starkings, with Mark Powers serving as editor and Bob Harras as editor-in-chief — the same core creative team that launched Claremont's return with X-Men #100. Claremont had left Marvel in 1991 following editorial conflicts, and his return in 2000 was brokered as part of the company-wide 'Revolution' initiative, in which he assumed writing duties on both X-Men and Uncanny X-Men simultaneously. Editor Mark Powers was notably involved in costume and character decisions during this period, including the deliberate choice to leave Wolverine in his classic look rather than give him one of the new uniforms debuted at the start of the run.
