X-Men Noir #3
In this gritty 2009 installment of X-Men Noir, the shadowy streets of 1940s New York simmer with tension as Tom, the Angel, swoops in to intervene in a brutal clash between Cyclops and Logan—knowing full well that the sea captain didn’t kill Jean Grey. Meanwhile, detective Peter Magnus, driven by vengeance after his sister is beaten by crime boss Remy LeBeau, takes justice into his own hands, only to force his son into a deadly mission: eliminate rival gangster Unus the Untouchable. With the X-Men standing in the wings, Tom’s aerial strike saves Unus, setting off a chain of consequences that ripple through the city’s underbelly. Written by Fred Van Lente and brought to life with moody precision by Dennis Calero—whose art defines the issue’s noir aesthetic, from pencils to inks and colors—this is a standout entry in the series, with a cover by Calero that captures its brooding intensity.
