In "The Phalanx Covenant: Generation Next Part 1: Encounter," the newest members of Generation X begin their training at Xavier’s, eager to prove themselves as the next wave of mutant heroes. When Banshee, Jubilee, and Synch head to the airport to meet their new recruit, Jonothon Starsmore, they’re met with an unexpected attack by the mutant vampire Emplate—forcing Gateway to intervene and protect the team. Back at the mansion, the group discovers a wounded stranger on the grounds, and as Gateway whispers a name—“Penance”—the first threads of a deeper mystery begin to unfold. Written by Scott Lobdell and illustrated by Chris Bachalo, with inks by Mark Buckingham and colors by Steve Buccellato and Electric Crayon, the issue’s cover by Chris Bachalo and Tony Daniel captures the tension of this pivotal moment.

The Generation X kids begin to settle in to life at Xavier's and prepare to train for being the next generation of mutant heroes. Banshee, Jubilee and Synch head to the airport to meet their latest recruit, Jonothon Starsmore, but he is immediately attacked by the mutant vampire Emplate. Gateway teleports the rest of the team in, and Emplate is driven off. Returning to the mansion with Chamber, they discover a wounded mutant on the grounds and Gateway whispers the name "Penance."
