"Love for Sale" tells the story of a woman from poverty who harbors deep resentment toward the word "poor" due to her impoverished childhood, and who marries Lloyd Wayne after a three-year engagement once he completes his architectural studies in England. When Lloyd returns home and becomes distracted by another woman's voice at his workplace switchboard, the protagonist struggles with jealousy and doubt about their relationship, ultimately resolving never to date another operator after finally hearing the mysterious "voice" in person and discovering she sounds nothing like expected.
