Paula’s parents are immigrants from Europe and raise her in a strict, old-fashioned manner. When her parents insist she get married before she turns 20 and that they will pick her husband, she rebels. Even though the man they’ve chosen is Arthur, whom she loves, Paula refuses on principle. She decides to elope with Alex instead, but Arthur intervenes. Paula says that she was “lucky in loving the man” that her parents chose for her.
