Death Walked at Night
6 pp · war

Lieutenant Harry Walker discovers that his American troops are being devastated by Japanese night infiltration tactics in the Philippines, so he devises a radical countermeasure: conducting solo night raids using the enemy's own sneaking methods against them. Armed with grenades and mines, Walker haunts the jungle darkness, turning the tables so completely that senior officers recognize his strategy's potential and order him to train other soldiers in these night-fighting techniques. His unconventional approach becomes so vital to the war effort that he's pulled from the front lines to share his hard-won expertise back in the States.

Death in the Fog
4 pp · war

When Sgt. Harry Wallach's 7th Army Division lands on fog-shrouded Attu, he becomes separated from his unit—but instead of retreating, he wages a one-man campaign against Japanese positions, mapping enemy defenses from memory and taking out machine gun nests and mortars to aid the division's assault. Fighting through the suffocating mist with grenades and automatic fire, Wallach pushes deeper into hostile territory, determined to rejoin his company and silence the strongpoints holding up the American advance. It's a brutal story of survival and valor on one of the war's most treacherous islands.

Siegfried Line
4 pp · war

Ron Eggers trained with heavy equipment in peacetime, but when he volunteered for the Army Engineers, he found himself in the thick of combat at the Roer River—where a hulking bulldozer becomes the only tool tough enough to breach Nazi strongpoints under withering fire. Racing against time and his own wounds, Eggers pilots his "Fat Flo" straight into enemy fortifications, shielding advancing infantry behind steel and diesel determination.

On This Point
5 pp · war

During the brutal Korean winter of 1950, PFC Carl Haalsmann and his sergeant hold a crucial machine gun position on Hill 381 against overwhelming Chinese forces—but when Sarge Joe Koski falls, Haalsmann takes command of the .30 caliber gun and refuses to abandon it, even as he's critically wounded and his unit retreats. With only a rear-echelon lieutenant at his side, Haalsmann makes a stand on a ridge, buying time for his division to escape while enduring waves of attacks and his own mounting injuries.

Red Ball Hotshot
6 pp · war

Whitey Janssen, a hard-headed truck driver with a troubled military past, finds redemption piloting ammunition runs on the famous Red Ball Express during the chaos of World War II. When Baker Company gets pinned down by a Nazi pillbox with no way forward, Janssen makes an unauthorized decision that could change everything—if he survives the attempt. This story of one man's reckless courage in the heat of battle shows what it takes to break through when every route looks like a dead end.
