John Paul Jones

As commodore of a combined French and American fleet, he led his flagship the Bon Homme Richard in one of history's fiercest naval encounters against the heavily armed man-of-war Serapis off the British coast. When faced with surrender, Jones's defiant reply—"I have not yet begun to fight!"—proved prophetic as three hours of brutal combat ended with the enemy striking their colors.
