"The Smoke of Battle!" follows Private Lenny Conn of the 178th Paratroopers on a personal mission in Tokyo in May 1952, where he successfully completes his assignment and returns to the barracks at Kimpo Airfield to celebrate with fellow soldiers. The story depicts paratroopers engaging in combat operations and depicts military life during the Korean War era, with emphasis on the camaraderie and relief soldiers experience after completing dangerous missions. A second narrative sequence shows American troops conducting a beach landing with minimal opposition, moving inland and establishing positions while awaiting orders to advance further into enemy territory.
