Angola Janga

Marcelo D'Salete’s Angola Janga (2018–present, çà et là) is a graphic novel that retells the history of the Palmares quilombo, a fugitive slave settlement in colonial Brazil. D’Salete, the sole artist and writer across its single published issue, grounds the story in meticulous research and stark, expressive black-and-white art. This work matters for its unflinching depiction of resistance and survival, bringing a crucial but often overlooked chapter of Brazilian history to a global comics audience.
