Batman: The Monster Men
DC · 2005–2006 · 6 issues
About the series
In 2005 and 2006, writer/artist Matt Wagner brought his signature pulp-noir style to DC Comics for a six-issue miniseries that reimagined Batman's earliest encounters with the grotesque creations of Hugo Strange. Set in the Dark Knight's formative years, Batman: The Monster Men strips the Caped Crusader back to his raw, detective-driven roots, pitting a still-untested vigilante against a mad scientist's monstrous army. Wagner's moody, expressionistic art and tight, character-focused storytelling make this a standout exploration of the primal fear and gothic horror lurking at the heart of Gotham City.
