About the series
In the early 2000s, Funk-O-Tron brought readers the irreverent, over-the-top Battle Pope, a 13-issue series that reimagined the Pope as a hard-drinking, foul-mouthed superhero who teams up with a wisecracking, weapon-wielding Jesus to battle demons and save the world. Co-created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, this black-and-white comic is a raw, satirical precursor to their later work, showcasing their early blend of horror, humor, and gonzo action. As a cult oddity from the pre-Walking Dead era, it stands as a scrappy, unpolished artifact of the indie comics scene.
