About the series
Launched in post-apartheid South Africa by a collective of Afrikaner artists, Bitterkomix is a defiant, satirical anthology that has skewered Afrikaner nationalism, religion, and sexual mores since 1992. Published by the creators themselves, the series became a vital underground voice, with its raw, transgressive style most associated with co-founders Anton Kannemeyer and Conrad Botes. Over 18 issues, it has evolved into a lasting, confrontational document of a culture in transition, earning a reputation as one of the most provocative and essential comics to emerge from the country.
