About the series
DC’s Black Lightning (1977–1978) introduced Jefferson Pierce, a schoolteacher turned costumed vigilante, as one of the first major Black superheroes to headline his own series. Over its 11-issue run, the title blended social consciousness with superhero action, largely written by Tony Isabella and Denny O’Neil, with art by Trevor Von Eeden and Curt Swan. It stands as a landmark for its grounded, inner-city setting and its direct engagement with issues of race and community.
