About the series
From 1944 to 1956, Quality Comics published Blackhawk, a high-flying war-adventure series that followed an international squadron of ace pilots—led by the enigmatic Blackhawk and including Chuck, Hendrickson, Olaf, and Andre—as they battled Axis forces and later faced off against recurring foes like the aquatic villain Killer Shark. The title was most famously shaped by the dynamic pencils of Reed Crandall and the steady scripts of Dick Wood, Paul Gustavson, and Joe Millard, with Gustavson also contributing art. A gritty, globe-trotting precursor to modern team books, Blackhawk stood out for its cinematic action and tight-knit cast, cementing its place as one of Quality's most enduring wartime creations.
