In 2017, First Second published California Dreamin', a single-issue graphic novel by Pénélope Bagieu, who both wrote and illustrated the story, with translation by Nanette McGuinness. The book reimagines the early life of a legendary musician, focusing on her formative years before fame. Bagieu’s warm, expressive artwork brings a personal, intimate lens to this biographical tale.
