Cap'tain Présente Popeye
From 1964 through the present, the French publisher Société Française de Presse Illustrée (SFPI) has produced Cap'tain Présente Popeye, a 238-issue series that follows the spinach-loving sailor and his extended cast—including Olive, Mimosa, Timothée, Gontran, and Georges—through a blend of classic and original adventures. While American creator Bud Sagendorf contributed his signature take on the character, the series is most heavily shaped by Italian talents like writer Alberico Motta and artist Pierluigi Sangalli, alongside frequent collaborators Sandro Dossi and Norbert Fersen. This long-running European spin on Popeye matters as a distinctive, decades-spanning showcase of how a beloved American comic icon was adapted and sustained for an international audience.
