Captain Confederacy

Set in an alternate history where the American South won the Civil War, Captain Confederacy (1986–1988) was a twelve-issue series from SteelDragon Press that deconstructed the superhero genre through a deeply political lens. Written primarily by Will Shetterly and illustrated by Vince Stone, the story followed a costumed champion of a Confederate nation, using its premise to critique nationalism, propaganda, and the mythology of the Lost Cause. A landmark of the independent comics boom of the 1980s, the series remains a sharp, provocative example of how superheroes can be used to challenge, rather than reinforce, cultural narratives.
