About the series
In the late 1940s, L. Miller & Son took Freddy Freeman—the crippled newsboy empowered by the wizard Shazam to become the world's mightiest boy—into his own title, Captain Marvel Jr. Across a nine-issue run, writer Bill Woolfolk and artists Bud Thompson and Mac Raboy crafted the teenage hero's solo adventures, a key expansion of the Marvel Family universe during the twilight of the Golden Age. This series matters as a showcase for Raboy's elegant, detailed artwork, which gave the character a distinctive visual grace that influenced later creators. It remains a cornerstone of Fawcett's original Captain Marvel mythos, offering a quieter, more character-driven counterpoint to the bombast of the era's other super-powered titles.
