Clue Comics
Hillman · 1943–1947 · 15 issues
About the series
From 1943 to 1947, Hillman Periodicals published Clue Comics, a 15-issue anthology that leaned into the crime and detective genre popular during the wartime era. The series is most closely associated with the gritty, hard-boiled storytelling of writer-artists Bob Wood and Charles Biro, while the art team of Dan Barry, Dan Zolnerowich, and Fred Kida gave its pages a dynamic, noir-inflected visual punch. Recurring character Jackie Law anchored the title, but the real draw was the raw, pulpy energy that foreshadowed the crime comics boom of the late 1940s. Clue Comics matters as a snapshot of the transition from superheroes to more grounded, suspenseful adventure tales.
