Comic Companion
Goode · 1854–1860 · 7 issues
About the series
From 1854 to 1860, the short-lived but pioneering Comic Companion was one of the earliest humor magazines published in the United States, offering readers a mix of satirical illustrations, light verse, and comedic prose. Produced by the Boston-based publisher Goode, the series ran for just seven issues, reflecting the experimental nature of pre-Civil War comic periodicals. While its creators remain largely anonymous today, its existence marks an important step in the development of American comic journalism, predating the more famous humor weeklies of the later 19th century. A curious artifact for students of early comic history, it shows the fledgling industry finding its voice.
