In 1988, Malibu Comics revived the golden-age sci-fi spirit with Cosmic Heroes, an 11-issue series that teamed the legendary Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering against a backdrop of interplanetary adventure. Anchored by the pencils of Dick Calkins—who originally co-created the character in the 1920s—alongside a young Bruce Timm's early professional work, the series offered a modern-yet-reverent take on classic space opera. It stands as a notable bridge between pulp heritage and the emerging direct-market era, showcasing Timm's first sustained comic work before his later animation stardom.
