Countdown: Sex Bombs

From 1995 to 1996, Fantagraphics and Studio Proteus brought Hiroyuki Utatane’s manga Countdown: Sex Bombs to English-speaking readers over six issues. A sci-fi action series blending espionage, superhuman abilities, and adult themes, it follows a covert team of female operatives with explosive powers. Utatane’s detailed, kinetic artwork and the series’ fusion of high-stakes adventure with mature content marked a notable early example of translated manga reaching a Western audience through a major alternative comics publisher.
