About the series
In the early 1990s, Image Comics briefly licensed Kazuo Koike and Ryoichi Ikegami’s classic Japanese manga for an English-language adaptation, published by Schreiber & Leser. Running 17 issues from 1993 to 1995, this series follows the titular assassin, a master of disguise and martial arts, who is brainwashed into becoming a killer for a secret crime syndicate. Rendered with Ikegami’s signature hyper-detailed, cinematic art, Crying Freeman stands as a notable early example of a mature, unexpurgated manga import reaching a Western audience, bridging the gap between underground comics and mainstream graphic novels.
