Daredevil Noir

In 2009, Marvel’s Noir imprint reimagined classic heroes through a gritty, pulp-era lens, and Daredevil Noir by writer Alexander Irvine and artist Tomm Coker was a standout entry. This single-issue series strips Matt Murdock down to his Depression-era roots, casting him as a blind vigilante navigating the shadowy, corrupt streets of a 1930s New York. Coker’s moody, expressionistic art—all sharp angles and deep shadows—perfectly captures the noir atmosphere, while Irvine’s script tightens the focus on Daredevil’s detective work and moral dilemmas. It’s a compact, atmospheric experiment that proves the character’s core tragedy works just as well in a trench coat and fedora as it does in spandex.
