In the mid-2000s, Gotham Entertainment Group launched Devi, a seven-issue series that reimagined the Hindu goddess Durga as a modern superheroine. Written by Samit Basu with art by Mukesh Singh and others, the series blended Indian mythology with contemporary action, introducing a young woman who becomes the avatar of the goddess to battle ancient evils in a vibrant, urban setting. Devi was a landmark for Indian comics, showcasing original, culturally rooted storytelling from a major local publisher and helping to pave the way for a new wave of Indian superheroes.
