Die Wombels

In 1977, German publisher Bastei Verlag launched Die Wombels, an 11-issue comic series that brought the beloved, trash-tidy creatures from the classic children's books to a new audience. Known for their cheerful motto "Wombling free," the Wombels' adventures in this series focused on their secret recycling missions and gentle mischief in a human world. While the series itself was brief, it stands as a key early example of how the Wombels' eco-friendly charm was adapted for European comics.
