About the series
A pioneering German humor magazine, Diogenes ran for 137 issues between 1853 and 1855, published by the Philp firm. It is most closely associated with the satirical artist and editor Wilhelm Scholz, whose sharp, politically charged cartoons gave the series its distinctive voice and lasting influence. As one of the earliest comic periodicals in Germany, Diogenes helped establish the template for illustrated satire in the country, blending social commentary with visual humor in a way that would shape the medium for decades to come.
