Fran an' Maabl

Fran an' Maabl, a three-issue comic from 1988 to 1991, was the quirky creation of writer-artist Edward Zolna. This short-lived series offered a offbeat, slice-of-life look at its titular characters, a pair of unlikely friends navigating their world. Zolna's distinctive, DIY-style artwork and deadpan humor gave the book a unique voice within the small-press landscape of the late '80s. Though it ran only a handful of issues, Fran an' Maabl remains a fondly remembered example of the era's inventive independent comics.
