About the series
One of the earliest and most vital anthologies of LGBTQ+ comics, Gay Comix ran for five issues from Kitchen Sink Press between 1980 and 1984. Assembled by a rotating cast of contributors including Mary Wings, Kurt Erichsen, and Richard Valley, the series gave a platform to queer cartoonists to tell their own stories at a time when mainstream comics largely ignored them. Its raw, personal, and often political work—from Wings’ pioneering strips to Rick Campbell’s illustrations—helped lay the foundation for the independent queer comics scene that followed.
