About the series

In the early 2000s, Kōdansha published Genshiken, a nine-issue manga series that offers a warm, insider's look at a college club for otaku. Written and illustrated by Shimoku Kio, the story follows the members of the "Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture" as they navigate their shared passions for anime, manga, and gaming. Rather than a parody, it’s a fond, slice-of-life exploration of fandom and friendship that helped define the "otaku culture" genre in manga. Its grounded, character-driven approach made it a touchstone for readers who saw their own hobbyist lives reflected on the page.
