Hideo Yamamoto’s Homunculus ran from 2003 to 2011 in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits, a 15-issue psychological horror series about a homeless man who, after a trepanation procedure, gains the ability to see people’s inner demons manifested as grotesque, physical distortions. The story’s quiet, creeping dread and surreal body horror made it a cult touchstone of early-2000s manga, renowned for its unflinching exploration of trauma and identity.
