About the series

In 1964, French publisher Arédit-Artima launched Johnny Speed, a 33-issue series that repackaged American DC war and adventure comics for a European audience. The title character, a globe-trotting soldier of fortune, headlined stories by regular DC writers Bob Haney, Dave Wood, and Robert Kanigher, with artwork primarily by Howard Purcell and Irv Novick. Running through 1970, the series offered a curated, French-language window into the action-packed, mid-century style of its U.S. source material.
