Man-Thing
Marvel’s Man-Thing (1974–1975) took the swamp-monster subgenre into strange, psychologically rich territory, anchored by the saga of scientist Ted Sallis transformed into the empathetic, touch-sensitive Man-Thing. Under the guiding pens of Steve Gerber and Mike Ploog—with Ploog also handling much of the moody art alongside Jim Mooney and Val Mayerik—the series wove a tapestry of horror, pathos, and dark humor. Its 22-issue run introduced the hapless Richard Rory, the formidable Ruth Hart, the sinister F. A. Schist, and the fanatical Foolkiller, exploring themes of loneliness and humanity through the eyes of a creature who felt everything. A cult classic of the era, it remains a landmark for its ambitious, weirdly heartfelt storytelling in the Marvel horror line.
