In 1935, the French publisher Tallandier launched Mathurin dit Popeye, a four-issue series reprinting Elzie Crisler Segar’s classic American newspaper strips for a French audience. Anchored entirely by Segar’s iconic writing and artwork, this brief run introduced the spinach-fueled sailor to European readers, preserving the original’s salty humor and scrappy charm. Though short-lived, it stands as an early, faithful bridge between Segar’s celebrated Thimble Theatre saga and the global Popeye phenomenon.
