McLean's Monthly Sheet of Caricatures or the Looking Glass
McLean · 1830–1834 · 53 issues
About the series
From 1830 to 1834, London publisher McLean released 53 issues of this pioneering satirical comic, with artist-writer Robert Seymour as its driving creative force. Each monthly sheet offered a single, densely detailed caricature—a biting, often theatrical commentary on politics, fashion, and society in early Victorian Britain. As a precursor to the modern comic strip, this series helped establish the visual language of sequential satire, influencing the genre long before Punch or Ally Sloper. Its blend of wit and artistry makes it a landmark of 19th-century visual humor.
