About the series
Stan Lee and Joe Maneely brought a gentle, monster-sized charm to Marvel’s 1950s lineup with Melvin the Monster (1956–1957). Spanning six issues, the series followed the sweet-natured, misunderstood title character through lighthearted, kid-friendly adventures that stood apart from the era’s more typical horror comics. Maneely’s expressive, playful art gave Melvin a lovable, cartoonish presence, while Lee’s scripts kept the tone warm and whimsical. Though short-lived, it remains a quirky, endearing footnote in Marvel’s pre-superhero history.
