About the series
Set in an alternate, matriarchal early 20th century riven by war and ancient magic, Monstress follows the young survivor Maika Halfwolf as she is bonded to a monstrous, world-devouring entity. Launched in 2015 from Image Comics, this epic fantasy series is the singular creation of writer Marjorie Liu and artist Sana Takeda, whose lush, Art Nouveau-infused watercolor pages have defined its look from the start. A landmark for its unflinching exploration of trauma, colonialism, and identity, the series has been celebrated for its dense world-building and the powerful, complex relationship between its heroine and the creature within her.
