About the series
Manfred Schmidt’s slyly satirical creation, the gentleman detective Nick Knatterton, debuted in the 1950s and was revived by Rowohlt for a brief, two-issue run beginning in 1977. Schmidt’s clean, expressive linework and deadpan humor defined these standalone adventures, which parody classic mystery tropes with a distinctly German, mid-century wit. Though the series is short, it remains a fondly remembered showcase for Schmidt’s singular cartooning and clever storytelling.
