About the series
In the mid-1970s, Pikin Press introduced a short-lived but distinctive Nigerian superhero series, Powerman (1975–1977), spanning 10 issues. Created by writer and artist Tunde J. O. Ogunbiyi, the series followed the adventures of a costumed African hero, blending local folklore and modern action. Though brief, Powerman stands as a pioneering work in indigenous African comics, predating many later efforts to center Black superheroes in their own cultural context.
