Rip Off Comix
Rip Off Press · 1977–1991 · 30 issues
About the series
Running for 30 issues from 1977 to 1991, Rip Off Comix was a flagship anthology from the legendary underground press Rip Off Press, showcasing the best of counterculture cartooning. The series is most strongly associated with Gilbert Shelton, whose anarchic humor and iconic characters—including the bumbling Fat Freddy Freekowtski and the outrageous superhero parody Wonder Wart-hog—appeared alongside the work of Frank Stack, Paul Mavrides, and Tony Bell. A vital hub for the underground comix movement, it collected the wild, satirical, and often drug-fueled adventures of Shelton's Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and their extended universe, cementing its place as a cornerstone of 1970s and '80s alternative comics.
