Sjef van Oekel

From 1990 to 1995, Big Balloon published six issues of Sjef van Oekel, a Dutch comic series centered on the perpetually hapless, scheming antihero created by the legendary team of Wim T. Schippers and Theo van den Boogaard. Van den Boogaard, the series' most frequent artist, brought his distinctive, expressive linework to the character's misadventures, which began as a radio and television persona before finding a natural home in print. This short-lived but memorable run captures the sharp, absurdist humor that made Sjef van Oekel a cult figure in Dutch pop culture.
