About the series
From 1971 to 1974, Marvel's Special Marvel Edition ran for sixteen issues as a tryout series that eventually became the launchpad for the martial-arts hero Shang-Chi. Initially featuring the villainous Fu Manchu and his son, the series shifted focus under the storytelling of Stan Lee, Jim Starlin, and Steve Englehart, with art from Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, and Starlin himself. It introduced the enduring character of Zheng Zu and helped define Marvel's kung-fu era, blending espionage with Eastern mysticism.
