Speedball

In the late 1980s, Marvel introduced a lighthearted hero with a unique kinetic power in Speedball (1988–1989), a 10-issue series co-created and illustrated by the legendary Steve Ditko alongside writers Roger Stern and Jo Duffy. The story follows teenager Robbie Baldwin, who, after a lab accident, gains the ability to generate a bouncing, protective energy field, adopting the costumed identity of Speedball. Balancing high school life with his supportive father Justin and his friend Niels, Robbie also faces the mysterious Madeline Naylor. Ditko’s distinctive art and the series’ energetic, youthful tone offer a playful contrast to the darker heroes of the era, making it a charming, if brief, Marvel footnote.
