Tales of the Unexpected
DC’s Tales of the Unexpected (1956–1967) was a 104-issue anthology series that blended science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, with a particular emphasis on outer-space adventure. Most frequently written by Arnold Drake, Jack Schiff, and Dave Wood, and penciled by Bernard Baily, Bob Brown, and George Roussos, the series introduced the space-faring hero Space Ranger (Rick Starr and his alien sidekick Cryll) and his supporting cast, including Myra Mason and Doctor Rocket. It also occasionally featured Clark Kent/Superman in standalone tales, bridging its cosmic stories with DC’s broader superhero universe. A key showcase for the Silver Age’s fascination with interplanetary intrigue, it remains a fondly remembered example of DC’s genre-expanding output.
