The Legion of Space

In the late 1940s, Invincible Press published this four-issue adaptation of Jack Williamson's classic space-opera serial, brought to comics by writer/artist Phillip Wearne. A foundational sci-fi adventure, it follows a trio of guardians sworn to protect the galaxy's ultimate weapon, the AKKA, from a tyrannical super-science empire. Wearne's vivid, energetic artwork brings Williamson's sprawling vision of ray guns, alien menaces, and cosmic stakes to life. Though brief, The Legion of Space stands as a notable early example of pulp science fiction making the leap into the comic-book medium.
