The Pirates of Dark Water

In the early 1990s, Marvel Comics brought the animated fantasy-adventure The Pirates of Dark Water to the page, following the heroic Ren and his unlikely crew—including the shapeshifting Tula, the brawny Ioz, and the monkey-bird Niddler—as they sought the legendary Thirteen Treasures of Rule. Across nine issues, writers Dwight Jon Zimmerman, Mark Young, and Lane Raichert, alongside artists Bruce Zick and Rob Davis, expanded the treacherous world of Mer, pitting the heroes against the ruthless pirate lord Bloth and his monstrous first mate Konk. Though short-lived, the series captured the swashbuckling spirit and ecological themes of the original cartoon, offering fans a deeper dive into this vividly imagined seafaring saga.
