About the series
From 1981 to 1983, Kitchen Sink Press revived Will Eisner’s classic noir newspaper strip in The Spirit Color Album, a three-issue series that presented the iconic adventures of the masked detective Denny Colt and his cast—including Commissioner Dolan, Ellen Dolan, Ebony White, and Sammy—in vibrant full color for the first time. While Eisner himself wrote and drew the stories, John Spranger assisted on art, bringing a fresh visual energy to the beloved 1940s tales. This series matters as a key early reprint project that reintroduced The Spirit to a new generation of readers, preserving Eisner’s groundbreaking storytelling and cinematic panel work in a format that showcased their original color brilliance.
